Lanarkshire landmarks sent around the world

Chatelherault Hunting Lodge, the Time Capsule, the Mausoleum and Motherwell Heritage Centre have been popping through letterboxes from Taipei to Ohio over the festive season.

These are just some of the landmarks featured on this year's Lanarkshire 2011 International Children's Games calendar and Christmas card with 500 of them now sent to every council in Scotland, members of the Games executive committee and officials from competing cities.

Pupils from across North and South Lanarkshire have also designed the 2010 calendar for the Lanarkshire International Children's Games which is accompanying the Christmas card.

And a competition was set for secondary school pupils to come up with designs depicting sports the young athletes will compete in at the Games. Decio Espinha, Nathan Fisher, Ryan Griffin, Declan McDonald and Elliot Hume from Braidhurst High had their artwork selected and it will soon be seen on desktops around the globe.

The colourful images represent the friendships that can be forged through sport and the dedication of the young athletes to their chosen events.

Councillor Jim Smith, joint-chair of the Lanarkshire 2011 Organising Committee, said: "We are making a real push to have the most successful ever Team Lanarkshire at the Games in 2011.

"However, it's also important we recognise and reward the talents of our young artists. They've made a fantastic job of the calendars and should be very proud their designs will be seen around the world."
