About ICG

The first International Children’s Games

The first International Children’s Games took place in Celje, Slovenia in 1968 at the height of the Cold War and more than 40 years later the vision the founding fathers had for the event has become firmly established.

The Games were the brainchild of physical education teacher Metod Klemenc, a Yugoslavian who had suffered enormously as a youngster during the Second World War and it was a suffering he did not want future generations to have to endure.

It was his vision to create an event fostering a better understanding among children of different cultural backgrounds, as well as promoting peace and harmony world wide which led to the inaugural Games being held in Slovenia, then part of Yugoslavia.

The International Children’s Games are a true global village, where spirited competition thrives and peace, tolerance, fairness and integrity live"   Richard Smith Secretary General of the International Children’s Games Committee
